What to pack for a horse show
Pack by where things are used, not by category, and you will stop hunting through bins at the show.
Pack by where it rides
Packing by zone beats packing by category. When you arrive tired and the horse is waiting, you want one bin to open, not six. Group things by where they will be used.
Trailer tack room
- Saddle, bridle and bit, with spares of the small parts that break: reins, stirrup leathers, girth.
- Show pad, schooling pad, boots or wraps, and a cooler or sheet for the weather.
- A clean, labeled tack bag for show-ring equipment only, so it stays tidy.
Stall setup
- Halter and a spare lead rope, stall guard or chain, buckets, hay nets and feed tubs.
- Hay, grain and supplements pre-measured and labeled for each feeding.
- Muck fork, rake, wheelbarrow or bucket, and extra shavings if you did not pre-order them.
- A fan and an outdoor-rated extension cord if the barn allows them.
Grooming and braiding box
- Brushes, hoof pick, sponges, towels, sweat scraper and detangler.
- Braiding bands, thread, comb, scissors and a seam ripper.
- Hoof dressing or polish, plus stain remover for last-minute touch-ups.
Rider bag
- Show coat, shirt, breeches or chaps, boots, approved helmet, gloves and belt.
- A backup shirt and breeches, hair nets and ties, and your number holder.
- Sunscreen, bug spray, water, snacks, and any personal medication you take.
Documents and first aid
- Copies of the Coggins, health certificate, registration and membership cards.
- Phone numbers for your vet, farrier, trainer and an emergency contact.
- An equine first-aid kit and a human first-aid kit, kept where you can reach them fast.
Plan for the weather you might get
Pack a rain sheet and an extra cooler even if the forecast is clear. Shows run long, and horses that stand around in wet or windy conditions need something dry to wear. In hot weather, add extra water for the horse and a way to sponge off after classes.
Pack the night before, load in reverse order
Load what you will need last first, and keep show-day essentials near the door: the horse's hay and water, your show clothes, and your paperwork. Check hitch, lights and tires, then leave the trailer ready to go.
